If indeed you are in need of some greenery yet believe that you have a black thumb, then cacti can be the perfect match for you! However, this does not mean that there is no watering… they are still plants, therefore, still need water in order to live. Just not as often as most plants.

These are water wise plants that store water in their leaves, stems or roots, creating a plump or succulent appearance. They are often found in hot, arid climates such as the desert and have adapted to tolerate long periods of drought.

If you haven’t noticed yet, the cacti available are quite prickly! Fun fact about them is that these spines are in fact leaves that have evolved to defend the cactus from thirsty desert animals. They also act as catching points for dew drops.

LIGHT

Bright direct sunlight. Be brave to give these fellas some good sunbathing.

WATER

Water only when the kokedama is light and dry. Overwatering causes the roots to rot and it is fairly hard for the plant to recover. Many kill their succulents and cacti by overwatering. Remember, these plants store as much water in them.

Water every 3 or so weeks in the warmer months and even sparingly over winter.

HOW TO WATER?

Submerge the whole ball in a bowl, bucket or sink up to the top of the ball. While it is light and dry, you may need to hold it down until the bubbles disappear. Then let it sit in water for 15 minutes. Take it out of the water and let drip dry.

FERTILISER, PLANT FOOD, SOIL CONDITIONER

Fertilise monthly in spring and summer to encourage growth and NONE in winter. In the colder months, this plant generally hibernates. Therefore feeding with fertiliser won’t make it do much.

We use Munash organics with our plants and kokedamas as their products are gentle to the plants, plus they are ORGANIC! With the plant food, every 2 months is all you need to do.

Soil conditioners such as Seasol, is also good to use during the growth season. Therefore, using it fortnightly when you water the kokedama is also good for the devil’s ivy.

GENERAL CARE
